Polyurethane adhesives for sandwich panels

Sandwich panels are sheets composed of two layers of facing and a core. The facing is usually made of metal sheet, foil, or fiberglass, while the core is made of PIR foam or rock wool. A polyurethane adhesive is an essential component.

PU Adhesive in Sandwich Panel Production

Sandwich panels are construction products used for thermal insulation of buildings. They can also serve as structural material for warehouses or livestock buildings.

They are manufactured using materials that inhibit heat transfer, as well as external layers that provide reinforcement and additional protection.

In the production of panels made from compressed mineral wool or poured polyisocyanurate foam, a polyurethane adhesive is necessary to bond all the elements (also referred to as a primer).

Types of Adhesives Used in Sandwich Panel Production

Our product range includes both one-component and two-component adhesives. In the case of one-component adhesives, polyols and isocyanates—the two basic components—are mixed together to form a prepolymer that reacts with moisture from the environment. In the case of two-component adhesives, these components are stored in separate containers and are mixed together; the reaction to form the polyurethane bond occurs based on the reaction of the isocyanate with hydroxyl groups from the polyol component.

Depending on the type of panel, different types of PUR adhesives can be used:

  • One-component: for sandwich panels with a PIR core.
  • Two-component: for manufacturing panels with mineral wool.

Strength of polyurethane adhesives

By using a polyurethane primer, one of the best materials for insulating buildings is created. Polyurethane adhesive provides tensile strength and forms a durable and resistant bond between the core and the facing. It is resistant to aging, moisture, temperature fluctuations, and radiation.
